(SACRAMENTO, CA) — On Wednesday, September 10, the California State Assembly passed Assembly Bill 250 (AB 250), authored by Assembly Majority Leader Cecilia Aguiar-Curry (D-Winters), with a vote of 62-5. The bill, known as the Justice for Survivors of Sexual Assault Act, now moves to Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk for final consideration.
“Every 68 seconds someone in our country experiences sexual assault,” said Majority Leader Aguiar-Curry. “AB 250 ensures survivors are not silenced by cover-ups or arbitrary deadlines. They deserve a clear path to justice and institutions that hide abuse must be held accountable.”
AB 250 strengthens protections for adult survivors by holding perpetrators and private entities accountable when they attempt to cover up sexual assault. The bill extends the statute of limitations through December 31, 2027, and revives related claims—such as wrongful termination and sexual harassment—when tied to sexual assault and institutional concealment. AB 250 is co-sponsored by the California Employment Lawyers Association and Equal Rights Advocates, with broad support from survivor advocacy and women’s rights organizations, including the American Association of University Women-California, ValorUS, and the Victims Policy Institute.
“The culture of secrecy is ending,” added Aguiar-Curry. “Sexual predators and the institutions that protect them will no longer escape accountability. AB 250 is about justice and healing for our survivors.”
