Assembly Majority Leader Aguiar-Curry’s AB 250 Signed by Governor, Expanding Justice for Sexual Assault Survivors

For immediate release:

(SACRAMENTO, CA) — Authored by Assembly Majority Leader Cecilia Aguiar-Curry (D-Winters), Governor Gavin Newson signed Assembly Bill 250 (AB 250) today. A victory for sexual assault survivors across California, AB 250 ensures adult survivors have expanded opportunities to seek justice, and that institutions may no longer hide behind cover-ups or expired deadlines to escape responsibility for this violence.

“California stands with our survivors,” said Majority Leader Aguiar-Curry. “AB 250 gives those who’ve been silenced by intimidation, shame, or institutional cover-ups another shot at justice, because survivors deserve to be heard, believed, and supported—not ignored by the system meant to protect them.”

Known as the Justice for Survivors of Sexual Assault Act, AB 250 strengthens protections for adult survivors by holding perpetrators and private entities accountable when they attempt to cover up sexual assault. It extends the statute of limitations for adult sexual assault claims through December 31, 2027, and allows survivors to revive related claims—such as wrongful termination and sexual harassment—when tied to sexual assault and institutional concealment. AB 250 is co-sponsored by the California Employment Lawyers Association and Equal Rights Advocates, with broad support from survivor advocacy and women’s rights organizations, including the American Association of University Women-California, ValorUS, and the Victims Policy Institute.

“This law makes sure sexual predators and the institutions that protect them won’t continue to escape accountability, and won’t be allowed to harm others because they’ve escaped responsibility” Aguiar-Curry added. “We’re helping our survivors get justice, healing—knowing that they’ve help protect others from the nightmares they’ve experienced. That’s a victory I’m so proud to be a part of.”
